Bozman, Marcus
Marcus & Malissa Jo Eccols Bozman (c. 1895)Marcus was the first Bozman to arrive in the Liberty Grove-Cottonwood community. He was born on February 26, 1826 and didn't arrive here until 1887. Marcus served in the Confederacy from Alabama where all of his children, except one, were born. His son, Gus was the first to follow him to Texas, arriving at Liberty Grove in 1888. When the Bozmans bought land, they paid for it with gold. They felt that silver was classified as change and used for paying the workers, and they didn't believe in having any of that paper money. Marcus first married Alline. Their children were; Elizha "Lish"; David Augustine who married Edna Alice Landrum, and Lucy A. Bozman After the death of his first wife, Marcus married Malissa Jo Echols. Malissa was born November 28, 1840, and lived until July 11, 1920. Children of Marcus and Malissa were; W. E. Billy, who married Hattie Whitley; Bobbie, who married Charles Lovelace (parents of Mae Belle Lovelace Collins); Mattie, who married Joe Bowman; Marlin, who married Rosa Singleton; Mollie, who married Walter Lee Allen, and John F. Bozman. John F. Bozman, the sixth child, was born in 1880 and married Beulah Baker. Their children were Eula Mae, who married John Hancock; Lionell "Skinner" who married Aliene Williams, and T. W. Bozeman who married Ann Ross. Sue Jo Bozman was the oldest daughter of Gus and Alice Bozman. She married M.E. "Ed" Wood, who was a well known and faithful member of the Church of Christ. The third child of Gus and Alice was John B. Bozman. John was born at Cottonwood in 1883. He married Belle Huddleston and their daughter, Della Faye Bozman married William Clarence Scoggins, son of William Scoggins and Ida Poovey. Marcus died on April 10, 1904, and was buried at the Wylie Cemetery. He paid for the lots in 1890 with pure gold. |
