Butler, Robert Fabius

Robert Fabius Butler

George W. Butler was born 18 February 1795 in Virginia. He was the son of Joseph Butler, born ca 1775 in Virginia or County Cork, Ireland, and Polly "Mary" James. Joseph and Polly were married in 1795 in Virginia. They came to Warren County, Kentucky, in 1809 with their son, George, and daughter, Tabitha.

It is believed Joseph was married after Polly's death to Sarah Majors. They had a son, Dewitt Butler. Later, George is shown as the guardian for Dewitt.

George married Lucy W. Jennings on 5 January 1818, in Allen County, Kentucky. They came to Dallas County, Texas, in 1867. Lucy was born 11 October 1799, in Sussex County, Virginia, and was the daughter of Labon and Elizabeth (Freeman) Jennings.

They had eleven children, including:
• Joseph Jennings, born 8 July 1819 in Kentucky. He married Elizabeth (Howerton) Jennings, his cousin, on 8 January 1843 in Kentucky. Joseph died 20 May 1898 and is buried in Keenan Cemetery, Farmers Branch, Texas. Elizabeth was born 28 October 1825 and died 5 April 1898, is buried in the same cemetery.

Children of Joseph and Elizabeth were:
• Richard Montgomery, born 1844 in Kentucky
• George Orson, born 1846 in Kentucky, died 1847
• Lucy Angeline, born 1848 in Kentucky, married John Thomas Yager in 1869, died in 1938
• Louisa Josephine, born 1850, married Roland Gooch
• Frederick Marshall, born 1853 in Simpson County, Kentucky, married Fanny Sluder
• Susan Jane, born 1855 in Simpson County, Kentucky married James O. Good
• James Stratton, born 1858 in Kentucky
• John Joseph, born 3 July 1860 in Texas, married Louvica Ferguson
•Williamm. Henry. born 23 December 1862. died in 1948, buried in Keenan Cemetery, Farmers Branch, Texas, married to Mary T. Griggs born in 1876 in Tennessee, died in 1959 and buried with her husband. They had an infant daughter born and died November 1901.
• Julia Elizabeth, born 1865, married James Walter Good
• Mary Ella, born 1868, married John A. Good, twin to James Good.
• George W. Jr. born 15 November 1822. He was a Baptist minister like his father. He married Edna C. King on 19 July 1863, in Panola County, Texas. Their children were:
• Joseph W., born 1864
• Julia E., born 1866
• George J., born 1867
• Allen, born 1869
• Cornelius, born 1872
• William J., born 1874
• Eumia M., born 1876
• Lewis H., born 1878, died 1885 and buried in Panola County, Texas
• William W. was born 2 April 1825 in Kentucky. He married Evi C. . William died 9 March 1893 and is buried at Frankford Cemetery near Addison, Texas. Their children were:
• Henry C., born 1845
• Nancy C., born 1848
• Sarah Jane, born 1849
• James B., born 1850
• Lucy Ellen (Paddy), born 1850, married G. M. Williams
• Mary (Mattie), born 1855
• Wm. King, born 1856
• George Nathan, born 1858, died in 1934, married Roxanne Perry, born 1867, died 1902 and buried in Keenan Cemetery, Farmers Branch, Texas.
• John, born 1859
• Caroline, born 1862
• Elizabeth, born 1863
• Joseph, born 1865
• Carroll, born 1868
Mary Anne was born 8 April 1827 in Kentucky and married Capt. J. D. Stratton who served in C.S.A. He was born 6 March 1825, died 5 February 1894, and is buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. They came to Texas between 1850 and 1860. She died in 1893 according to one record, but her grave marker shows 1899. Their children were:
• Celia Evie, born 1845, married C. B. Strait
• George A., born 1848, married Mary E. Sower
• Henry H., born 1850
• Mary E., born 1855, married George H. Meason
• Charles E. B., born 1861, married Maude E. Christian
• Amadan Dealia, born 1866, married Wm. Newton Stints
• Daniel E. was born ca 1830. It is believed he married in Kentucky and died as a young man ca 1850 in Kentucky.
• Thomas F. was born ca 1832. He was a freighter killed in the Civil War.
• John W. was born ca 1835 in Kentucky. In 1860, he was living with the J. D. Stratton family and was listed on the census as a waggoner. He never married. He died ca 1863 in Little Rock, Arkansas.
• Lucy E. was born ca 1840. She married Stephen M. Holland. According to census records, two of their children were:
• James R. born ca 1865
• Sophae born ca 1867
The Butler family, from its removal to Kentucky from Virginia, was deeply involved in the work of the Baptist Church. Both Rev. George Butler and his father, Joseph, are mentioned in early records. In May, 1841, the Shady Grove Baptist Church was organized in Simpson County by George. His family became active members. Three of his sons, Joseph Jennings, George W., and Robert Fabius became early Texas ministers.
George W. Butler died 19 August 1873, is buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery near Richardson, Texas. His wife, Lucy, died 27 December 1877, and is buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery also.
