FOSTER, GEORGE W. (DUB)

George Washington “Dub” Foster, Sr. was born May 23, 1917 on his family’s farm at Liberty Grove in northeastern Dallas County. His grandfather, George Washington Forster, was seriously ill at the time and Dub wasn’t named until after his grandfather’s death, which occurred almost two months later, on July 13, 1917.

When Dub was about sixteen, he moved in with his widowed grandmother and her daughter Mollie (also widowed) in order to assist them in taking care of the family farm. This land is located on Vinson Road and is part of the original homestead ac-quired by Dub’s grandfather, George Washington Forster, in 1876. Dub’s wife and eldest son continue to reside at this original home site.

Dub received his education in the two-room schoolhouse at Liberty Grove. He was a farmer and a trader. He began his trading days while working for his father at the Foster & Sons Grocery in downtown Wylie in the early thirties and later at the family-owned Liberty Grove Grocery store, which was located east of Rowlett on Elm Grove Road.

Dub also farmed lands around White Rock Lake and combined wheat along Preston Trail from Dallas into Kansas. He raised cattle and horses along the creeks between Wylie and Rockwall. All of this timberland is now covered by Lake Ray Hubbard. Dub loved the outdoors and wildlife. He was one of the founding members of the East Fork Water Supply District.

Dub married Tommie Jean Boren in McKinney, Texas on June 19, 1941. Tom-mie had been working as a ticket agent for the Interurban in Allen, Texas prior to their marriage. Their children are namely George Washington, Jr., Gerry Don, Joyce Janette (deceased), Mary Forster (de-ceased as infant), and Timothy W. Foster.

Dub was the fifth of ten children born to James Albert and Mary Eula Ross Foster. Both parents were descendants of early Dallas County pioneer families.

Dub died at the family home on May 19, 2000, and is buried at Restland Memorial Cemetery in Dallas.
